I keep my "reading for pleasure" books alphabetical by author. My cookbooks are separated by most used to specialty cooking.
Hi Kiva! It will depend upon your decorating sense and the room you have available. I have tons of books but no shelving or 'library' space; so, I put two six foot shelves on two different walls in my craft room, and stacked them horizontally in order of subject. Now I can just stand there, look up to a particular 'row' and see and choose which book I want to get to. Cost about $20 altogether, including the wall mounts and hardware.
Hi Kivabell, Here are a couple of links that may help! https://www.wikihow.com/Organize-Books

Good luck!

I have a back room in the house that sometimes is called the library. I have six book cases, four are antiques, one tall standard bookcase about three feet wide, and one made with bricks and wood shelving that has been used for about forty years that reaches about eight feet wide and three foot tall with three shelves and top. I keep my favorite books in one bookcase, they are all series and I keep them in order of the series, some are hardcover, some are paperback. The brick and board one contains things like various bibles I have been given and inherited, self help books, pet care books, my 97 year old mothers nursing books and mine, etc. The tall one contains many of the other series that have been collected by they family and scrap books and year books. The other two antique book cases hold some of the really tall books that don't fit in the others and kids books from school and college and kids book from when I was little to the newer ones for the grand kids. All my five pots of hibiscus and probably some tuberous begonias will also live in this room over the winter in the south window.
This sounds familiar. Did you post this before? It sounds like you have them in the best order possible.
I think I mistook one answer for the original questioner. Kivabell. It would help a lot if you gave us an idea of how many books, what kind of space. We have books in almost every room, bedrooms, attic, two living rooms husband's art studio. they are basically organized by subject. Almost all are hard cover. First pic books in corner are poetry and literature, books to left are art books, second pic; books are biographies, third pic, closed bookcase holds valuable books.
Start with subjects, then alphabetical and keep all the same subject on one shelf or next to it if you have more in that category.
