I have a beautiful, designer couch. PROBLEM! it , or the seat cushion, I should say, is stuffed with feathers. Consequently, I have feathers all over my house.

I would contact an upholsterer in your area for suggestions, but in the meantime, here is my idea. The feathers are surely not loose in the cushion. They should be in a casing of some sort such as muslin. I would sew a casing just like the one they are in, but out of landscape fabric -- the black stuff you put on your soil so weeds don't grow through -- and slip the original pillowcase of your feathers inside that. If weeds can't grow through, feathers shouldn't be able to penetrate it, either!

It could be that the cushions are not underlined with interfacing or lining fabric that prevents the feathers from pushing out through the fabric that shows on the outside.

Do you have any information as to who/where the cushions were covered/ sewn up? The form of the couch may be designer, as you say, but if the cushions were constructed by a professional upholsterer, the feathers should not be protruding.

Hi Mindy. My name is Cindy. I have the exact same problem with my couch. I'm afraid that one day the cushions will be flat from loosing so many feathers. If you find a solution, could you please write it back to me? Thank you in advance.

I surely will. I am going to take the cover off mine just as soon as I can to investigate to see what the problem is, but in the meantime, someone suggested that I try landscape fabric...! yes, landscape fabric. If the weeds can't penetrate, then maybe the feathers will not be able to either...????? Also, someone suggested that I contact an upholsterer to see what they suggest. Ssso, we have options girl! I've had birds that were not as bad!

    Hello Mindy,

Depending on your cushion size—could an additional protective pillocase cover be used as a inner cushion liner work?

They are meant to contain feathers and prevent dust mite intrusion. Im my experience they have contained feathers poking out of my beds feather/ down-pillows.

Same problem. Solution: Ditch the feather inner cushion and stuff with cotton or acrylic cushion stuffing. No feathers poking through cheap cushion material=no more problem.

Take off outer covers and use Ticking or canvas or Shower curtain, to make Zipped covers for the inner cushions.

You could buy ready made quilted Pillow Covers.

Hi Mindy: Can you remove the feathers and then place them in a pillow case and then back in the cushion? It won't be as soft, but you wouldn't have the problem.

Encase the feather container in a plastic bag, then place back into the upholstered pillow cover.
