How to replace or cover the mantel?
I would like to put 8 in or 10 in wide by 50 in long wood board for mantel. Not sure about the depth of the wood. How do I do that?

Is there a mantle that you are replacing? How is that fastened?
depth would be minimum of 1 1/2" thick, depending on how massive you want it.. use a cardboard mockup to get idea...then heavy duty brackets,, they can show or be hidden..
