the towels are musty because they are not totally dry....and may have mold spores.
Ventilation - they are getting damp!
Start by giving your washing machine a good cleaning. Tide makes a good version which you use once a month. Make sure that you don't leave wet towels sitting in the washing machine. This is probably what's causing the mustiness.
if they can't spread out to dry when you live in a high humidity area they will mildew
Add vinegar during rinse cycle and I assume you use hot water setting, then do not use dryer sheets but dry on high heat for at least 50 minutes and font crowd your towels. I do 2 at a time that's it since they are so large and I want them to be very clean. When you think of the dust from the vents and your dry skin rubbing off on them you will own more towels then you ever imagined. It's a constant turn around so I limit myself to 3 colors per season to match my bedding for that season and of course the rugs which I buy that you can use on both sides. I was those 3 on their own as well and do the same as my towels but obviously here I put all 3 in together and dry for at least 60 minutes. And before anyone out there asks themselves, yes I do have filters in my vents that I change out once a month. But dust is all around us. Talk about a pain changing out filters throughout the house every month. Anyway dry your towels longer than you feel that they need because to the touch a hot towel that is almost dry feels the same as a hot towel that is thoroughly dry. Someone posted the vinegar trip k on this site and not using the sheets which you shouldn't use nor liquid softeners because it makes your towels less absorbent. The vinegar gives you soft fluffy towels and they don't smell like vinegar. I don't measure but if I had to say I would think that I use slightly under a 1/4 cup since I do 2 towels at once and same for rugs.
