Prune above a bud anywhere, usually donttrim more than a third of the height. Spring, right after the Bush is done blooming is the best time to trim if you want blooms next year. Otherwise you can trim anytime but you won't get blooms next spring.

Ooh, maybe I'm wrong. I follow my grandmother's schedule. We prune when all the blooms have died, but that might not be until November. Of course, yesterday was Oct. 9, and it was 96 degrees here, near Dallas, Tx. If we fail to trim before spring, then we do a lighter trim in Feb. or March. 😇💞
