Vinegar will kill grass and weeds. Will need to be reapplied over a period of time, but earth friendly and cheap.
Cover grassy areas with black plastic (cut-open garbage bags work), weighed down. It keeps grass and rain off the area and kills the grass/weeds. After a couple of weeks, take off the plastic and rake up the dead stuff. Obviously, this is a spring-summer endeavor. You can use any type of plastic, even a plastic tarp. Low cost, minimal labour.
You can also fill a large water container with vinegar, mix a good amount of hot sauce, and pour the mixture over the grass/weed/shrubby areas. This will kill the growth.
