Hydrangeas need to be pruned as soon as they are done blooming. They do not like nitrogen so never mulch the with grass clippings for example. They do need calcium and potassium. For that I grind my egg shells and banana peels and coffee grounds in a blender with a little water and pour it at the base of the plant. Fall is a good time to feed them going into winter and also again in spring to encourage blooms. Hope this helps, it did mine
Depends on the type of Hydrangea you have. Do you know what kind you have?
Hi Lynn. It depends on what type of hydrangeas you have. I don't prune mine at all. If I do I will have less blooms, or maybe none at all. For mine the new growth and blooms come from the what look to be dead branches. In spring I just cut the old blooms off.
