generally purple fountain grass is a annual. What is you location
https://ask.extension.org is a site specifically for your grow zone -- in some areas is treated as an annual
Hello. I would cut it all back first. This will make it easier to divide. You only want to divide if the new growth is at 6". Then replant and water well. I use a spade shovel or a old knife to divide my perennials.
No not fall. Leave it until April/May. First, cut it back to about 12 inches tall. Take a spade shovel, some other kind of flat shovel, and cut down into base of grass. First in half and then in quarters. Dig out 3 of the 1/4 pieces. Plant these 3 pieces in other similar areas of your yard. Repack the original piece in with dirt. Water in all 4 pieces. And Bob's your uncle.😄
