Check out pallets, there are so many projects to convert them, check on Pinterest for suggestions on what style you are looking for. Have fun with it!
I would (and did) a patio and the first time I laid out the pavers (6"X12"X1") I just did them straight across the area. I didn't like that so I did them on a 45degree angle. Then I edged the tips and empty triangles at the edge and put black stones in the triangles. I'm pretty sure there will be a video or tutorial on the prep for it either here or on YouTube.com. At least with the pavers you won't have to deal with under bracing or anything. Just pack down the dirt really well, add sand and level it and then place the pavers on top, sweep sand over it all so it gets into the voids between the pavers and soak it down. I have wooly thyme growing in the cracks. All I have to do is hose it down to clean it off.
