First off I would power wash the brick steps. Then maybe a small tierd stand in the corner by door with some flower pots.
Cute area have fun with it.
How about cleaning it as recommended, getting a more colorful door mat (or even change it with the seasons) and then do a flower box over the OUTSIDE of the top straight railing so that it won't take up any space on the porch or steps. Can you paint the door or trim?
Put the handrails on the opposite wall....place pots of flowers, etc on the end steps. People will use the rails either way if needed.
Do you have room for a small chair? A thrift store find. Paint one of the colors you have in your house color scheme or get brave and paint the seat one color, the legs another color and the back another color. Add a nice pot, maybe shiny gold with a nice green plant. Change the pot with deco for the seasons. Or find a small table and cut it in half and mount on wall. Maybe add a black rod iron pieve to the wall, above fair or table. Or wood wall baskets planted with bright yellow flowers and a striped or polka dot ribbon. Change with the seasons.
Linda, I now see the small porch you are talking about. Maybe my ideas might work or give you some ideas. Add plaques of choice to the entry wall either rod iron or even spray in a rust color to match your bricks.
You have a great space to add that little bit of curb appeal, I would add larger white trim around the front door and be sure to add a fresh coat of paint but in a satin black. How about adding a hanging light above, but making sure the the door able to swing freely or if that’s not an option the add large light to the right of the door wall along with a spiral urn flower pot. I not sure if your mail is at the curb but I’m adding a black mail to wall near the door. Then power washing the brick stairs and the brick stairs are very charming and painting the railing black would tie it altogether. Here’s a few photos of all thing I had mentioned📌
In addition to what Barb has said, I would replace the doormat with something a bit larger and more colorful.
You need a carpenter....small job.
Hi Linda, what a cute area! Stand back and look at your poarch area! Imagine the look you would like to have and go from there. A few suggestions I would try are once the area is cleaned, I would paint the door burgundy. You can use a large wreath according to seasons on your door. In the corner, I would add a tall flower stand and change the flowers out according to seasons (fern, spring/summer, marigolds or mums, fall, pansies or johnny jump ups, winter). If you have an old chair, you can create a plant holder using the chair and chicken wire. Using Command hooks, add a large initial painted in a bright color, in the middle of the area by the door. On the concrete below, next to the steps, I would add a welcome garden flag, a large pot filled with flowers and add seasonal decor. Shop thrift stores and yard sales for pots. 🌻Susan
PS. I would leave the rails where they are for safety.
Oh the possibilities! So many great ideas already but I have a few more to add..I would first transfer the address numbers to the right side of the door. Many people look up near the door for an address and your hedge would not obstruct it. A wall planter would look good on the wall or switch your wreath to that wall and add a flat basket (wicker or wooden one like those you would see in Historic Colonial Williamsburg) or swag to the door. Similar to the one Barb from N.Y had in her example of a light fixture. Freshen the paint on the door and trim and just stencil a simple HELLO or WELCOME (many ideas also found on internet) near the handle. Change your hardware, this itself would give it a little bling and stance. If there is no existing light fixture or no budget for one, add a plant hook with a lantern and a outdoor/ indoor candle with a timer. This adds a bit of coziness anytime of year and in the summer replace it with a shade loving annual. A milk can would look good on the right side of the door which you can also add a plant in season to. My favorite would be to place a little bench, you can even DIY one yourself to sit or set something on for all the seasons. I especially love this because you can add the lantern, a plant, a pillow with a blanket scarf, ice skates, snowman, etc. etc..Hope these ideas help! Love to hear what you do!
Add a couple plants of different heights to the right. Buy a larger, pretty rug, and if you are really zealous, add small white lights to your railing. Just buy the ones with the white cord (since your railing is white), wrap around the top railing, and plug in at your door. You can also spruce up your entrance by painting your door a bright color like red and hanging a seasonal wreathe!
Have you thought about tiling the “upright” section of the steps. I’ve seen this done and it makes them look very Mediterranean, with a very colourful front door mat plus paint your handrail the same colour as your door. Good luck - it’s a very pretty area anyway x
I would paint the bricks with an exterior paint, you can google that, and put a tall narrow planter on porch. I would add a light as suggested, move my address numbers to the house, I would not place a table or bench at the top of the stairs as I think it would give your area a cramped look. There are lots of good suggestions but I think you would be amazed how clean and fresh painted bricks would look. Good Luck and post an updated photo!
The house numbers are on it.
Washing the steps will sure brighten them up! And the bottom pad. Then like the others have mentioned, rugs! Top and bottom areas. Easier to change than paint. And maybe put the wreath on the side wall with some small lights in it? The area is small, so more things will clutter it up.
