It's a dark green that doesn't go with anything else in the house. It's hard to tell in the picture, but it's a marbled green color. I'm not sure what you do when g... See more
Paint certainly is a possibility. Do you like wood? You could box or cover the fireplace with wood and then make the mantle a thicker piece of wood in a contrasting color or stone or faux stone.
Painting it white will not necessarily tone it down but make it stand out more.
You could do a German Schmear on it with mortar, then add a wooden mantel in white with moulding detail.
Then I would make a decorative wooden screen in front of it. Remove a lot of the country acessories for a more tailored look.

You could white wash the fireplace and then do what Roxaneg said and make the mantle wood. I too have a corner fireplace and my walls are about the same color as yours. My fireplace was painted (by previous owner) all white. But I have a sort of platform area at the bottom then the fireplace (which is all brick) all the way to the cathedral ceiling is solid white. You would think it would be a focal point but it looks just plain bland and boring. Whitewash would give you varied color and the wood on the mantle would be beautiful ! If you don't use it you could put a colorful floral arrangement or stacked wood in the opening.
You could white wash it. and perhaps make a storage spot in the opening. add shelves maybe replace the mirror with something a different shape and design.
