Are there unCookable potatoes? You certainly could grow excellent potatoes using the methods recommended by Rembatb. I just loosen the soil a bit and shove already sprouting potatoes in the ground. I use compost and occasional chemical fertilizers. You won't get the yield that you would if you followed the instructions on those blogs, but it's not the work either. This year I discovered that I need to get the potatoes as far as possible from tree roots. Good advice.

In a garden
You could actually cut potatoes to plant. When you see the "eyes" on the potatoes, that eye can be planted. So the more eyes on a potato, means more pieces to plant. Hope this helps you.
