I have a kitchen cabinet idea but I'm not sure if it will work

25 year old solid oak cabinets. I'm thinking about painting the cabinets black, removing the center panels from the doors and replacing them with frosted glass, and staining the doors a red mahogany. All appliances are black, black granite countertops, with apricot marble flooring. What do you think?

just my opinion, and it hard to say without pictures. but unless you have a big kitchen, you may find it very dark. Since the floors are apricot colour I think it may be too many colours.

Sounds great! "When faced with builder-grade or dated cabinets, the first impulse of many new homeowners is to rip them out and start fresh. Then comes the sticker shock, which is usually followed by a trip down the paint aisle. While painting existing cabinets is always a great option for an inexpensive cabinet face lift, replacing the cabinet door inserts is another way to get a new look for less." I agree that you will probably find it all too dark, unless you have a lot of wall space showing. PICTURES please. I have also found that oak stains very nicely, after a good cleaning. Solid painting may not be necessary. In the post above, you will see many examples of how I used a wash of gray over oak and am very pleased with the results. Now it has been well over a year living with it all.

Hi Linda. I think your idea sounds like it will turn out really nice. The only thing that gives me 'pause' about it is whether it will make your kitchen too dark. We have mahogany stained cabinets with black appliances (not much natural light coming in) and our kitchen always looks too dark to me.

I'd love to see pics of it if you decide to do it...I bet it will be NICE! : )

Sounds an awful lot of black - do you have a very light kitchen? I would change the cabinet colour to a Orangey /Brown and the doors to match, because of the colour of your Floor.

we sanded oak cabinets and applied clear poly erthane. Lighter and beautiful.

I was also thinking about painting mine black. The kitchen is being transformed in to the man cave (long story) and the colors are the Lotus race car theme gold, green, and black. Wasn't sure about having so much black in a small room. I think the glass idea is awesome and just may be the answer to my problem! Frosted or etched glass and some LED strip lighting Thank you so much for the idea.
