Yes, we pruned ours this week. We live in Middle TN. This seems to encourage new growth in the spring.

I never did, I just cut back the dead wood in the spring once the buds started growing.
you can prune out the old stalks. They will be kind of gray and hollow. I never cut the green ones back. They did amazing even being 5 feet from driveway that was salted in the winter.
