Bug spray doesn't work.
first of all don't leave out, refrigerate...if you're gonna leave out, don't let the fruits or certain vegetables ripen too much (rot)...that said clean the area with vinegar and rinse
disposable jar plastic wrap or a sheet of paper. brown apple cider vinegar or a piece off rotting fruit. fruit or vinegar gets in the jar 1st. plastic wrap with tiny hole or paper cone with tiny hole. they go in....get drunk and can't find their out....hummm....just like a few guys i've dated..
Plastic cup filled with apple cider vinegar, cover with plastic wrap and rubber band it on. Poke holes with a unbent paper clip end. They can get in but cannot get out and drown. To prevent keep area clean of ripe fruit and make sure drains and disposal are clean.
I had a problem with them and read where you pour Apple Cider Vinegar half way in your glass. Put plastic wrap over the top and poke small holes in it. The fruit flies go in but cannot get out and they die. I fixed 2 glasses and in one day I had none in my house.
Wash all produce when you get it home. That is usually how you get them, especially the fruits and vegetables that you leave out on the counter. Don't leave thin skinned fruits or vegetables out as they can bore through the skin and lay eggs. That is how my mom got her infestation this year, she had a potato in her pantry go bad and got them from that, then she left out a tomato in her fruit basket and all of a sudden it had spots and went bad and her infestation tripled. Once I got rid of the tomato and the potato and a few around it, if gradually got better and with a trap, they disappeared in about a week. I now check on her potatoes weekly! She is 97 and still on her own even though she is a little forgetful. My brother and I take her shopping and to get groceries and her hair done weekly. I bring her left overs so she doesn't have to cook whenever I have left overs. I get her trays of things like chicken legs (her favorite) and pork chops and cook and freeze then in baggies, again so she doesn't have to cook.
