I have successfully laundered in my washing machine (I have an old washer with an extra large metal tub), on the gentle cycle in cold water with woolite or a free and clear type detergent and then air fluff in dryer for a bit, then spread out on old sheets on the floor to complete the drying process.

I have about 12 vintage quilts and this is the way I wash them. I fill the bathtub with cold water and let them soak for a while (maybe even over night) then I let the water out and walk on the quilt trying to squeeze all the water out. I fold, walk, turn, fold walk till I get as much water out as I can. I then fill the tub again with hot water and some good laundry soap, maybe some washing powder; no bleach! Let soak, remove water, repeat the walking, turning, etc. fill tub again with cool water. soak, repeat walking etc. Dry outside if possible, supporting quilt so it doesn't pull. But these quilts have no family value to me as I bought them all. In your case I would try to remove the spots, first spraying with just water. But I do recommend actually washing for a nice sweet smelling quilt that is then protected from further damage. But can be used!
I have heard that the best place to wash your precious quilts is the bathtub - a CLEAN bathtub, of course. Then, set it on a chair to drip dry in the tub. When it has finished dripping, you can lay it out on a stair railing or another bed with a fan on it, turning it over until it is thoroughly dry.... It is time consuming, but you don't have to do it very often. It is protected and clean at the same time.
I have 2005 quilts and I put them in a cold wash and let them dry out in the air and keep turning it over. Or the dry cleaners. Sorry I can't help anymore, the best of luck
