Yes. It prevents leaks.
It's REALLY REALLY EASY to use!!! And not very expensive if I'm not mistaken, just a couple dollars - try your local dollar store first!!! And GOOD LUCK!!!!!
It's also called Teflon tape. It's very cheap to buy and it's best to put it on to prevent leaks. Make sure you put it on in the same direction that you screw on the new showerhead.
I have done this before and Karen gave you good advise on applying the tape. Yes you need to use the tape or you may end up with a dripping connection and end up taking the shower head off so you can apply it. Best to do it now to prevent problems later. I bought a shower head years ago that even came with the tape!
Yes I would use the plumber's teflon tape to prevent dripping/leaking. I do this all the time for clients, its not hard, just need a pair of channel lock pliers, use a damp washcloth and the channel lock pliers to loosen the old shower head, wind the tape around a few turns, cut, then screw on the new hose attachment (don't over tighten it). Test.
