Aha ........... salvaged flooring for the ship lap look. You can purchase a box of flooring at your local Habitat Resale store. Measure, cut, glue up or nail up. If you are going to paint, sand and prime the boards first, then paint. Best of luck.
Where are you planning to do this... which room(s) ?
You can cover it with light plaster job, then paint wall or cover with pallet wood if want to do it on the cheap both work great.
Hi B, If you plan on covering the whole wall, you don't need to remove it. However, you need to think ahead. In a couple years are you going to want to do something else with the wall? If you take the paper off now, you won't have to in the future. To remove the wallpaper, use a wallpaper steamer. It's really the easiest way.
What ever you decide, have fun!
Back in the eighties, hubby and I bought a VA foreclosure that was in rough shape. The neighborhood was built on an old swamp and the realtor shut off the electricity and the basement flooded because the sump was off (it ran year round even in Minnesota). One section of wall needed the studs replaced. The whole family room was paneled, but we couldn't find anything to match. We decided to give that portion of the wall an entirely different look. We put in brick that was brick size, but thin, and put up mirror tiles on the top section and put a wood rail in between. It turned out really nice and added a lot to the room and made it not look as long as it was. If we could have afforded it we would have done more, but had to do too many other things to the house to make it look better. No ceiling in the basement, wallpaper to replace in the entry way, new carpet and paint throughout the house, new tile in the bathroom, new floor in kitchen and cupboards to refinish. Big job to do, but we ended up adding a lot to the value of the house, almost doubled.
Over cabinets in the kitchen, very high ceilings
In a kitchen... bead board would look nice... give it a vintage feel.. you could also use the faux tin sheets (like the old tin ceilings) they come in many patterns and can be painted any way you like
