Disposing of Different Types of Batteries
Dispose of button batteries at a hazardous waste collection site or recycling facility.
If your city does not have a recycle program you can find local businesses or even a library that takes household batteries.

We recyle ours through a Batteries Plus store.
I put mine in a coffee can with a hole in the lid large enough to drop batteries through. We have curbside recycle that will pick them up so when the can is full I pour them into a plastic bag, tie it shut and place them in the glass bin on the curb. If you have to take them to a store for disposal find out how they want them contained and go from there.
Supposedly it's safe to throw out the ordinary alkaline batteries, but I save them for a town clean-up day where we can take potential pollutants and electronics for disposal.
Be careful, everyone, about saving batteries in a box, can or drawer. A fireman told me that he has put out a number of house fires where a bunch of batteries were tossed in a drawer or can, nine volts were a particular risk, the contacts touched others, generating enough heat to start a fire! He recommended storing fresh batteries still in their packages, and to put used ones in a container where they can't touch the contacts of others, or put a piece of tape on the end.
