you can do it....rent a machine and purchase the products for it. Have your rooms cleared of furniture and vacuumed befor you rent it. Start with the rooms furthest from the entry door work your way out of the house. If you have to step on the damp carpet put garbage can liners over your shoes...I like the ones with a draw string...I’ll tie it around the calf to keep it on. I prefer late fall to get it done...having the heat on and a dehumidifier gets it dry quicker.

My vote is to hire out. There are a number of national chains and local independent shops that do a great job. Just compare prices for services rendered. Back in the day they moved all kinds of furniture and it was included in the price - these days some places charge extra for furniture moving. I have my carpets cleaned every 3 months, only because I have a lot of pet traffic. Before pets I had done twice a year. Plus they are efficient and takes less time than if you did it yourself.
You can do it yourself.with a good carpet cleaner and the proper cleaning solution.
For routine stains (pets, food) a home steamer works well (I use either OxyClean or Awesome Orange instead of the rug shampoos)...once a year I let the pros do it.
By the time you rent a steam cleaner and purchase the appropriate cleaning products, you might as well have the pros do it. I have done both and found that the rental machine does not do as good of a job as the pros do.
