Buy a.new one. The instructions are inside the packet. It is really easy to follow directions that come with the locks. Word of advice: Buy medium to high grade locks. The cheap ones dent and are easily pushed, pulled out.
Go to places like Best Buy and check out what they have and what the reviews are like for the ones they carry. I would also check with places that put in doors and windows to get their opinion, they may have had experience with the different locks you can use remotely with your phone. You may also want to think about changing out the door handles to the kind you just have to push down instead the regular knobs to make that easier for your wife. I have had stiffness in my fingers for over twenty years and it gets into a little pain in the winters with increased big fronts and incredible pain when I have to root around the freezer. When I am helping with clearing snow in the winter I wish that we had that kind of handle.

Consumer Reports occasionally does reports on new electronic security things like door locks, etc. You might check to see if they featured some lately, or if any other home website (Bob Vila, This Old House, Family Handyman, etc., to name a few) might have.
Nancy, I can't stand cold on my fingers either. My solution to rooting around in the freezer is to keep an old, clean pair of garden gloves handy nearby. They have a rubber coating on the fingers. Also, for scraping the car windows, I bought a crazy mitten, quite cozy, that has an ice scraper attached, with the handle inside the mitten. I just put my whole gloved hand inside this mitten (I bought it at a discount drug store) and scrape away. It's also got a big cuff to keep the snow out of your sleeve. I think I paid $4 for it.
And if you have to be outside a really long time clearing snow, those little warming packets are great. I know LL Bean and Costco sell them, I'm sure lots of other places do too.
