You can cut the flowers off now or leave until spring.
Leave until the spring so the proper pruning is done
Do it now if they only bloom on new growth like mine. Its still before the harsh cold of winter.
Carol I have asked the same question, still awaiting an answer.
There are two pruning methods for these beautiful shrubs. You have to know which type you have. Try going online to identify your plant, then investigate pruning when your plant blooms on new growth or old growth. Here's a link to some great advice!

My bushes are the same right now bc of the flip flop of 70'-55' days. I live in Southeastern NC btwn Wilmington and Myrtle Beach SC. My Great Grandma ALWAYS told Me to leave them alone as they will recover better in the spring with new buds hope this helps
I cut mine back each year when they wilt, about one foot above the ground and they all grow back to 6 feet or more the next growing season.
I always wait til Spring. The dead stems provide shelter for birds and animals. I cut them off in Spring to about a foot high and they grow like crazy!! We are Zone 5A.
