Would it devalue my fireplace to paint it out in white? It is currently gray brick.
We have built-ins on either side of our gray brick fireplace, and I would love to paint the fireplace out in white. However, my husband feels it would be a bad idea.
You could try white-washing it for a translucent look.

Everyone's said great tips and ideas... one thing I realized through years of doing-it-myself is no matter how "it" actually turns out, no one dies, so you're good to go no matter what!!! So have fun with it!!
What you want is the brick to still show but have some color on it? you whitewash with paint and water... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkVBm3bitEE I would also tape off the edges of the fireplace with wide painters tape, and you can also you a large car sponge of wiping the paint off the brick with a bucket to rinse it out periodically, just damp, not wet.

I just used watered down paint, my brick was actually darker than yours to start. grout was black
Personally I think the red brick is very attractive.
Is this a fireplace that was burning wood and was converted, or do you plan to ever have a heater with the gas, where the bricks would be exposed to heat - then you MUST use paint that will hold up to high heat. This is a special paint. Also remember if you go to sell the house, painting brick may lower the value.
