You can buy peel and stick mosaic "tiles" at the home improvement stores. You might also consider a Contact paper with a marble design or decals. All are reasonably priced, easy to install and easy to remove.
Tin ceiling tiles... vintage, faux, or new and distressed. Easy to cut, easy to put up,, looks great. Google: tin ceiling tiles and you will find lots of sources for the ceiling tile panels. Materials include metal (my 1st choice for a back splash) plastic or a foam material. Lots of patterns, some variety of sizes (most are 24 in. X 24 in.) and most at a reasonable cost. Amazon is one source that had a lot of options.

Look into “ Simple Mat” sold at Home Depot. Lots of videos online. Have used it twice, it’s AMAZINGLY simple to use and works great!
If I were going to do this and cost was a factor I would use glass. You can paint it, put paper on it etc. etc. in this picture the piece to the right is glass, decoupaged, but it could have been painted or wall papered etc. And all you do to clean is windex!
Here's a post I wrote on my DIY & decorating blog about the easiest beadboard ever! I installed it myself in a few hours for the cottage backsplash. (I even have shopping links for it at the end of my post.)
