Smoothing textured walls

I just bought a house with textured, plaster walls throughout the entire living room. What are the least expensive ways (relatively speaking) to get a smooth finish?

I would try doing a skim coat over the entire wall with drywall mud then you can sand that down and make it as smooth as you prefer.

I use a 12-14" drywall taping knife and a 6" in tight areas.
You can do a skim coat, but it is hard to do. I would recommend living with it for the while and it may be not be an issue after you are in the house for a bit. The other option, which is also hard - is to put up 1/4" drywall over the top of it.
If you really can't live with it, I would put up new drywall. Skim coating it will be labor-intensive.
Wall in pic appears to have a shine on it to me. If it does, you would have better success with getting a smooth finish by sanding off the shine likely from a gloss or semi gloss paint.
Depending on how deep the texture is, you may only need to sand the walls to get the smooth flat wall you desire. Then, prime & paint.
To fill in texture. It will be easier if semi or gloss paint is removed first. There're are pole Sanders that are good help with this as well as numerous hand Sanders.

Oh my friend, this is a wonderful base for a faux finish, if you're up to it. That room can be the talk of the town! Paint it with semi-gloss paint, then rag or 'wash' on a dark glaze. ie: white wall, gray glaze. When dry it will look like a stone wall. OR apply a mocha glaze over a light cream for a warm rich look. I'd LOVE to have those walls. If all else fails, skim coat it with joint compound, sand, prime, paint. Best of luck.
