Before you remove a wall, you need to make sure it is not a load-bearing wall. Hire a professional to determine that first.
First, make sure it is not a load-bearing wall. If not sure, talk to a professional. You could structurally ruin your house by removing it without knowing if it is a load bearing wall.
If the wall is a load bearing wall then a beam has to be put up into the ceiling where the wall comes down. Could be expensive. Good luck.
Be careful whom you hire. Make sure, if you're removing a load-bearing wall, that a structural engineer provides proper sizing for a beam to replace the wall.
A big hint: before you start, pay a structural engineer or master builder to determine what new beams, electrical and cable wiring, foundation and other changes need to be made. And if you are removing a gas fireplace, you need a plumber and electrician, and a ceiling and flooring person. Please take photos and write it up for a Post on Hometalk.com. 😇
I would also like to remove a wall to create an open-floor plan but mine is a load bearing wall. If you are unsure about yours, I recommend using a web site like Home Advisor. They do background checks and provide customer reviews. We have used them a couple times and been very happy with result.
First you need to determine if the wall is load bearing and if so, what needs all needs to be done to achieve your desired result. Above all else, follow local building code and only use licensed contractors.
