Hi there, I've seen people use a pen and literally "Draw" ship lap on to a wall (using a level etc.) and then distress the whole wall to make it look like wood.
Use fencing people are throwing out. Check with a local handyman who installs/replaces fences. You may get the old stuff for free. Cut up to sizes you want and remove any really bad parts.
when you think about it, most "shiplap" is Faux since most people who lt aren't tearing down old houses and re-using. Most of the wood for shiplap is in strips between 3" and 10" wide, so anything can be used that way.
A couple months ago I read a post where a home owner used flooring that looked just like ship lab. They said it was easy to install and it looked great. Also inexpensive.
Thanks
you can cut plywood into strips of 5-6" wide, space them on the wall by placing a nickel between the boards, this gives the appearance of ship lap. Or you can buy the real thing at Home Depot, not as expensive as you'd think.
