to the 'inside' of the piece that comes up against the ceiling you can glue solid sheets of styrofoam or sealed fiberglass batting; will take some 'doing' to get it to fit around the supports and the steps as they fold up -- working from INSIDE the attic, with the stairs UP ( you'll need someone in the house to bring them back up, then cut and glue pieces that will cover the seam where the solid bottom piece meets the floor -- you will have insulation in a strip (about 4-6" wide should do it) around the opening attached on the attic floor; then you'll have insulation on the board that makes the pull down part. Hope you understand this -- sorry there no way I can draw you a picture !
there are covers that sit over the hatch. i have a tent type model, you can take batt insulation adhere it to a piece of ply a few inches bigger than hatch, and call it good.

Insulating a Crawl Space/Attic Door for Improved Energy Efficiency
There are kits to do this at big box hardware stores.
At the top of my two attic stairs, there is a box frame the stairs fit into. I would first dust and caulk the box frame on the side of the frame away from the staircase. My stairs come down in two sections with strong hinges, with nothing behind the bottom section of stairs. Behind the top section of stairs is the “door” to the attic. I could attach the batting type of insulation between the upper stairs and the inside of the door. If you are feeling a draft from your attic door, you might have insulation missing, a hole in the roof, a gap around some vents, or a broken window, or something else allowing too much air into your attic. Do not lay a plastic sheet or rug or anything else in the attic near a gas furnace or other source of fire or water. Be sure to take photos so you can write a post on Hometalk.com! Other people probably have the same question. Best wishes ☺️
