Love it that is why want to keep it but Thought of some decorating idea if you have any.
We had one of these openings years ago, a bit wider than yours. We hung two leaded glass (stained glass) panels inside the opening. Hub made a frame for each and hung with pretty chain and heavy hooks attached to studs. Sorry no picture--still have the glass but not the house. Something like these:

You could frame out the opening like a window is and add a wider "sill" at the bottom of the passthrough. The framing could be any type of material(s) such as reclaimed wood, intricate profile molding, craftsman type design, etc.
In fact, in adding a wider "sill" it could become stool seating for meals & snacks! If you feel extremely constructive, you can install cabinets on the living room side of the wall along with shelving and a spot for your TV.

First get rid of that fan and get a nice light fixture and declutter and,
