I am a very busy person and love by flower gardens, I use a lot of Portulaca plants in mine. They flower all season. Flowers close at night and open during the day. Many different bright colors. Need very little to no attention. :)
Petunias and marigolds are two of my favorites.
Oh, as well as Sweet William Dianthas
I like to use the soil moist granules in the potting soil to reduce the watering maintence. I find zinnias, petunias, geraniums and begonias to be the most trouble free. Sedums are another but they ( in pots or planted) are green and textured, but return year after year.

Thank you everyone. Excellent ideas and information. I am a travel agent so I am in and out and gone from 7 - 14 days at a time. I just want my garden to look beautiful when I return. summers are hot and humid so trying to keep everything watered can be challenging. Love the soil granules idea and will definitely look at the flower recommendations as some I have not attempted in the past, but I love an adventure.
