How do I combine crown molding with woodwork ?
- The Archway is very tall in the dining room and doesn't leave much room for crown molding what's the best way to combine the two ? The house is a Victorian. But I like the combination of Victorian and craftsman .

Pinterest is the place to look for design ideas.
I've made the kind of molding assembly that you are describing and it did add a lot to the room. In my opinion you just don't have the space to do that here. Looks like you have about an inch above the current molding and that is just not enough to attain proportions that will look good. Don't take my word for it, dig around on Pinterest and you may find someone who has done it.
You could incorporate the door frame with the crown Moulding, It would have to be as tall as the distance between your door frame & ceiling.
Hi Barb. I would remove the molding on the door then install your crown molding. Then you can see if you need to cut the side molding. For the top piece you may be able to cut that as well or replace it with a thinner piece. Good Luck.
I think you're going to have to go with a more narrow moulding around the doorway, unless you want to lower the height of the doorway itself.
Was this opening made recently? It looks like there was no allowance made for crown molding. Something narrow enough to fit between molding at top of opening and ceiling would be very small. If you wanted crown molding as deep as the molding in this room, what about ignoring over the doorway molding and start the crown molding in line with opening molding? Then paint the wall the inch or so that does not have molding to match the ceiling!
I would put in crown molding up to the door molding with a return equal the distance of the gap above the door molding. Would enhance the doorway and look cohesive with the door molding. Hope you can picture what I mean.
I think that would work, thanks.
