What all have you tried already? Solvents are generally the best solution to old adhesives.
That black residue could be black mastic adhesive and contain asbestos. you may want to leave it alone!
Try Goo Off from Home Depot to dissolve most adhesives
cooking oil, goo gone, WD 40 all work to remove residue.
The adhesive is tar based used back in the 30's to 60's. It does not have asbestos in it. Just petroleum based. They used to use gasoline or kerosene to remove it. The tiles you removed more likely have asbestos in them. If the were stiff and measure 9" square they are asbestos. Best not to mess with them. If you did then you more likely introduced asbestos into the air and breathed it in. You may want to have the air quality in the home and room analyzed. Best way is to cover the adhesive with lauan underlayment or cement board.
