I am in arid southern California. Lavender, rosemary, geraniums, lily of the Nile, some sedums, creeping thyme, grow easily, drought tolerant and very low maintenance.
Specimens of those plants which are natural to the eco-system in your locale. You can often find attractive hybrids of these common plants at local nurseries, Maybe take a drive around the neighborhood and take some pics of landscaping you like to see in your space. Take it to the nursery and if you can get a close match it will save time money and mistakes the first time around. Good luck and thanks for your service!
I would suggest succulents. They do great on the ground as well as in planters and need very little water. There are many varieties, textures, colors, and styles. I hope you find some you like because they are very easy to grow and are maintenance free. They need very little water. If you find some just follow the instructions. I think succulents are a good place for you to start looking. As the wife, mother, and daughter of vets of 3 wars, (WWII, Viet Nam, Iraqi) I thank you so much for your service to our country. I appreciate you so much. Let us know if we can be of any more help. Please let us know if you find what you like.
Check with a LOCAL nursery... they will know what will do best in your area... a container garden with a drip watering system might work well for you... no bending over and automatic watering
Decorate with real and faux plants, looks like you have a good variety of plants but offers low maintenance to maintain. I have a friend that does this and after a while, she waters all of them, as she can't tell them apart! Just remember to dust, now and then.
