Another shady question...

Pamela on Apr 13, 2014I have lots of shade in my zone 6 garden. I love Clematis which some cultivars will grow in shade to part sun. Here is a link for vines that grow in shade for a zone 9 garden: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/fast-growing-flowering-vines-grow-shade-45362.html Have fun!!!Helpful Reply

Charlotte on Apr 13, 2014Clematis is great but you may want to grow a companion plant with it. Usually plants like clematis take 3 years to get to its full potential. 1st year-sleep, 2nd year-creep, 3rd year-leap.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Apr 14, 2014For a butterfly garden, I would certainly opt for the passion flower. Climbing hydrangea is beautiful, but gets to be very large and would easily take down a trellis.Helpful Reply

Genie Krivanek on Apr 14, 2014Don't use climbing hydrangea. They need shelter but also need some sun and if it's too shady they won't bloom. AND they get HUGE! I would go to a LOCAL nursery (not a big box store) and talk to them. They can give you the best advice for your area. You may pay a dollar or two more but it will be WELL worth it. Good luck!!!!Helpful Reply

Connie S on Apr 14, 2014Passion flower can turn invasive if not kept under strict control. It can send runners and re-seed itself. Cardinal Vine grows well in partial shade. Butterflies love it.Helpful Reply

Teresa Schroepfer on Apr 14, 2014Clematis is sure a good choice. You could plant moon flower with it, but it is an annual. I still love it and the blooms are outstanding and it like the sun. Post a pic when you decide.Helpful Reply
