What Would You Do to Improve this Fireplace?

My son has run out of money to improve his house but would love ideas to improve this fireplace area. The gas fire has been removed so there is just an empty rectangular hole. The white part is tile as is the hearth area.
It might be easier for people to make suggestions by seeing a current picture.
I would replace all the surround(s) with a more contemporary tile, dress out the wood pieces with more trim, paint the wood white...put a good electric insert into the fire box when funds permit

Once you select materials for the facade, go to a a granite yard and find a scrap of coordinating granite to replace the hearth. This can all be done very cheaply.
Good idea but not heard of granite yards in UK - though covering the tiles with something and taking away the border a good idea.
