I have a beautiful 7’ wool runner in my hall. I took it to the cleaners yesterday to have cleaned-they estimated $50. Today they called and said come get it - they couldn’t clean it ?!? What the!? When I picked it up I was told they thought there were too many stains on it. It’s a hall runner! I don’t eat on it and I don’t wear my shoes in the house!! Anything suggestions how I can clean it myself ?

Best thing I can suggest is try soaking the whole thing in Oxi clean! Longer it soaks the better! It gets out stains nothing else ever will! I swear by my Oxi Clean for stains in all my fabrics! If you can wash your rug after soaking in a washing machine with oxi clean too that can also help if soaking not enough

But I love candy cotton! Laugh out loud

You don’t necessarily have to run the washer except to fill with water and let it soak in oxi clean. Then turn to rinse cycle if you choose to get as much water out of it as possible after it’s soaked For several hours in Oxi clean

I would test for colorfastness using rug shampoo.... and then use my carpet cleaner if its ok. If its not colorfast, then I would use a small carpet brush and do by hand the best I could, probably with carpet cleaning foam.

    or Try another carpet cleaner.

Look for an Oriental rug cleaners. Also bare feet are not good for any rug---body oils!

  • First, I am surprised that the cleaners even quoted a price. Not something a regular dry cleaner handles. Here are some links, see if they help.

If you have other carpet in the house, next time you have them cleaned, have the rugs cleaned too. You need a proper carpet cleaner, not a dry cleaner/laundry service.

Find a rug cleaning company, that's their specialty. Your rug doesn't look that dirty, so they should do a good job

OxiClean! Not the carpet/rug kind. Just multipurpose. Here’s the thing tho; (happened to me) you may make clean spots. (Yup, you will think WTH because the rest of the rug will be dingy looking) DO NOT GET THE KIND WITH BLEACH ADDED! Test a spot. If it works but the stain is cleaner then just soak the whole thing and wash on delicate. No soap tho and on cold.

Rent a carpet cleaning machine from Lowes or Home Depot---Rug Doctor or Bissell both make good rental machines. Follow directions that come with machine. If you don't have other carpet in your home to clean, see if a neighbor or family needs to clean their carpet/rugs and then split the cost & the use of the machine. Good luck!

I have a Carpet cleaner and I put Awesome cleaner in the machine at 1/2 the recommended amount. My runner came out beautiful. For wool I would not use super hot water.

Look online for one in your area that can do it. No reason why not. I have a wool rug and it cleans well with my steam cleaner. (Hoover over 20 years old) I have NO idea why they call them steam cleaner because they have nothing to do with steam. I use basic carpet cleaner and stains and dirt come out. Tough spots can be hit with a toothbrush then clean again. The best cleaner I have found is the stuff they sell at the home shows where they demonstrate a filthy rug and it comes clean. It really works. the one I currently have is made by Dupont.
