stain the concrete and planters.Landscape based on you hardiness zone
Rip out the one stone bed on the left inbetween the two lamps....plant some flowering shrubs and perennials in all of the beds to soften the squareness of the other brick/stone features ...consult with your local greenhouse for plants that will thrive in your growing zone...add coloured mulch around the plants. I would also remove the rocks being used as edging, but that is just personal preference. If you are leaving the stone work(s) because you are unable physically to remove them, you could consider advertising them for ”free“ if someone dismantles them.
a perennial ground cover would soften the lines of the rocks and add color. paint the bricks and sidewalk to match a color of the slate. I like the dark gray color. ivy in the planters would also soften the geometric look. add some perennials to the planters that add height.
I'd tear out all the stone planters (if that's what they are), edging stones and flagstone. Leave the walkway and just plant shrubs. It's much too busy.
Plant flower Seeds...........or buy Plants or Both eg: One or two mature evergreen plants or Architecturals and small plants or seeds.........
Is that a black and white picture? That area needs color.
Wish I could see the front of the house! Does the house have brick or rock on it ? Personally, the two smaller brick planters jump out at me. I like the idea of painting them a darker color or removing. Does the large square bed have a function ?
I see that you have electric running in the front yard with the light . Because of this you could have some sort of water feature with elec pump. I think a simple fountain and plantings will help a lot. Right now all you see is the rock work and dirt. The fountain / water feature will become a focal point and the rock work becomes texture.
The flower bed in the lower right of the photo needs some evergreen plantings. Looks like there is something deciduous there now. Roses ? A herb garden would look fabulous on that slope. If you don't have roses I would add some but not right against the entry. Landscape roses fill in quickly. Maybe against the rock wall near the sidewalk ?
Wow. This could be so pretty.
It almost looks as if the bigger rock rectangle was a grill once. I would pressure wash the outer walk area. By putting awesome cleaner in the pressure washer. It is for grimy surfaces and is sold at dollar store. As for ground foliage, perrinials- low cover ( flowers that come back yearly) and are low to the ground. Nice colorful ones. Only 2 things for now...whew . good luck.
I would knock out the brick sqs, pressure wash the rock and build a bench seating around the wall, or raised beds depending if you want neighbors to join you in the yard, or vegies to grow or shrubs. Evergreens in the planters for yr round maybe add some more lighting, since utilities are there. Don't know about the huge rock sq. on the left, looks a little bulky, I would probably knock it out and use the rock some where else. Looks like the neighbors could use some landscape also, be inspiring for them. The wall does keep side walk traffic off the yard, may need to treat the rocks with paint or stain after cleaning. I would have the drive way resurfaced with concrete or black top or you could patch and paint. If you have a porch try to blend it in with the yard to look as part of the house, maybe add a table umbrella and couple of chairs. If you're not into grass cutting, add concrete patio or an arbor and just use the planters for greenery and add a few hanging baskets in the spring. Grass yards are a thing of the pass in many cities now.
I agree with most of the ladies I would rent a Power washer if you don’t own one yourself if you don’t want to do that there’s something called krud cutter you can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot an adding plants and small shrubs but my best advice to you not knowing what your budget is and how much you’re willing to do on your own I would contact several landscaping companies an someone who cuts the lawn an the bushes we have a guy came oit You took a look at our lawn and our drainage problems we have a lot of natural springs bubbling up out of the ground he gave us several great ideas you was also willing to work with us we get a lot of the labor or self And the stuff that was completely out of our league he did the one thing I did learn tool that u don’t use on a regular basis is cheaper to rent U also can ask a stone company how to clean an fix the wall out front and the ones that r brick I would try to make the same as the front wall thats Is an easy fix just stone and some concrete would you can buy at Home Depot they have a quick mix add water to the concrete stir in the bucket and you can use it to add the stones to that brick at least they would match I could go on and on forever of things that you could do in that front yard if you’d like to contact me here’s my information nvidia1963@ yahoo.com
I would do as others stated by power washing and staining your current rock/planter/maybe a grill, looks as though you are in winter months there I use fake winter flowers in my planters in the winter months. If grass doesn't grow in dirt areas I would add lava rock, which butterflies love in the summer because they sock up moister and lava rocks would match the brick walk out front.
