Excellent fast growing pine, can trim or let grown.
Get help from your county extension office. You want to place the windbrake in the correct spot. Some one in the distant past of my property planted pines as a wind break.....now I have 4 ft of snow piled on my back door.
try skip laurels. they grow pretty quickly and stay beautiful green year round. you can trim them like a hedge or let grow naturally.
I agree, County Extension office, or local nursery owners can point you in the right direction. Consider carefully, as "fast growing" also quickly becomes "aggressively invasive" and can create more trouble than the wind. Also, fast growing plants and trees are often brittle, and tend to snap off in high winds. Without knowing what your zone is, its difficult to make recommendations, but make sure to ask your local expert about problems with root incursions, suckering and self seeding issues before you plant what may be a future headache.
I planted Hybrid Poplars that grew like crazy but had to be taken down a/c they are in the Cottonwood family and produce fuzzy stuff in the spring that blows all over everything. Replaced with Red Japanese Maples - one in the front and one in the rear yard. Seem healthy and require trimming every 2-3 yrs.
Several of my neighbors have planted Leland Cypress that grow very fast but ended up taking them down because they grew too large, even with trimming.
Lots of people nr. me have used Bamboo for privacy and quick growing. Don't know about care, but it is nice to look at.
