Turn to left then pull off .it will be hard to get off if it is old .take to one of your big box stores like home depot .they can make sure you get the right size .use plumber tape or ask the salesman for help .clean the pipe well .they can give you directions .no need to turn off .I watched my son do mine . Good luck
Sounds as if you need a new washer..........
I agree. Sounds like you need a new washer or cartridge. The spout is where the water comes out. That is not your problem. The handle/handles turn the water on and off. That is where the washer or cartridge is. Based on your question I would call a plumber. Also watch what he does, ask questions, so you can learn. I remember my dad looking over a plumbers shoulder while he was working. The plumber told my dad he makes him nervous. My dad replied " I'm paying for this, I want to make sure you fix it right". Being an immigrant that was the only way my dad learned how things work in America. Never had to call a plumber again.
It does sound like something needs to be replaced-check out this article for more info. https://www.hometips.com/repair-fix/how-to-repair-leaky-shower-faucet.html
