In my area installation is included in the price of the carpet. Not difficult to install yourself. Just nail down some tack strip, stretch carpet and trim off the excess. It would be worth renting a carpet stretcher those knee stretchers hurt like the devil.
Depends on just what the job entails, where you are and what the prevailing rates are in that area. You should checkout homeadvisor.com and angieslist.com to find carpet installers. After all, if I gave a price a price of $200 for a simple install, labor only, and no one in your area will do it for less than $500, what good would my number be?
Usually the cost of installation is same the cost of the square ft price of the carpet, not including the underlay, or removal of the old carpeting. So, for example, if the cost of the carpet is $3 sq ft, and your room is 100 sq ft, then the cost of the installation would be $300. However, as Ken said, prices can vary according to different factors such as where you live in the country, time of year, and individual company promotions.
It's usually about 3-5 dollars per SF on carpet installations.
