I like to use drip irrigation
Drip irrigation will put the water where you need it.... right on the plant. It works really well with a timer...so you can go on vacation in the summer and not worry about losing plantings because they won't get watered... If you want to incorporate hanging planters... there are "pressure compensating" dripper buttons that will allow the higher plants to get as much water as the lower ones.
Tip: I use a thermos filled with boiling water to soften up the tubing so it will slip easily over the "barb" type connector Ls and Ts, and drip buttons.... just 10 seconds or so will do it (the boiling water will stay warm longer than hot tap water... and softens the plastic faster... less waiting)
