what did he use
Probably as long as you want it to before you remodel. Don’t set even warm pans on the counter. Try to have a pad under heavy pots and pans which can chip the paint and laminate. Actually, plan for padding under all work areas. Dishcloth under lightweight chopping boards and bowls (also keeps them from sliding). Hot pads, potholders, runners, tablecloths, placemats, handtowels, metal or wood trivets, cork pads—just get used to thinking ahead. And you can put everything away when you want to show off your “new” countertops.

I painted my counter tops with just plain acrylic paint & marbled it. Then I used a couple coats of polyurethane. I have used my counter tops for several years now and have never had any problem on what I should put on them, hot or not. I thinking of re-doing them again. I used black, dark green & gold. Looked awesome marbled.
