If you have pets, see how movement in the house is handled, some are quite touchy, but most have improved greatly. If using just for yard or alley, not a concern.
In my area, Ring and Simply Safe have become popular systems, might be worth looking into.
We spent about $2,100 for an HIK VISION high resolution camera. If you don't get a good one, you are wasting your money! Ours was so expensive because it was a very difficult installation...high up and difficult attic work!!!
We have already caught 2 incidents for the police since we got it 2 years ago! Both were kids being foolish! But then kids can cause a lot of damage...we were lucky.
But the police said we had the best photos of all the camera footage given to them. Several were arrested.
P.S. If you have easy access to plug in cameras, you can buy lesser expensive units and set them in windows.

I would say that it's better not to go for DIY installation. Because a small mistake in installation can result in high replacement cost.
