Use rollers, NOT brushes. Of course it's cheaper to do it yourself, but you might be happier spending more for professionals. You may take a look at "re-facing" your cabinets. More expensive than paint, but a LOT cheaper than replacing. Also, changing the hardware out for something more modern will make a big difference.
It would be cheaper if you could do it yourself ( Paint Pro Roller ) available online ! should give great results.................
Wash the cabinets with Murphy's oil soap, dry completely. Remove all hardware, and the draws and doors. Get high gloss paint, and lay the cabinets doors flat to paint them. You can spray paint the hardware, or buy new, it gets pricey though.
Couple of ideas-get quotes to have cabinets painted; search you tube videos for painting yourself, but be sure you are comfortable painting yourself, if possible remove cabinet center panels and replace with glass or carpenter cloth (wire mesh) if you want rustic look. Don't know where you live, but there are recycle/restoration businesses which salvage usable building materials-fireplace mantels/mouldings/cabinetry etc.
It will definitely be cheaper to paint them yourself; however if you are wanting a factory finish (and you’ve not done this before) it may be cheaper in the long run to get it done by a professional. I would get a couple of quotes first to see how much you will save over replacing the cabinets...if the cost is still high, you may want to do it yourself and compromise a bit on the end look.
I doubt you could bring them to a paint shop but I might be wrong. But here is some good advice.

For real factory paint, use a professional paint sprayer.
