You did a good job on the sanding it seems. You will get real close on staining if you are doing that to finish, but of course composite material does not have the grain of real wood or have the same absorption, but you could use a product such as a decorative glaze to put in some grain using a fine brush. Would be a great distress look piece as well. If you are just going to paint and not stain, you should be good to go!

If you aren't married to the stained wood look, consider using chalk paint which is very forgiving and will give you an even finish over the mix of materials.

You can't stain pressed wood - it will have to be painted instead. You could stain the ront and paint the sides.
