Dont remove it! cover it with boards!
You are asking for a really messy job, cover the hallway and stairwell with 1/2'' sheetrock. Easy peasy. I was a drywall contr and hated popcorn ceiling spray. And note the asbestos warning from Kim above. Asbestos fibers were added to the drywall mud and then the little pieces of foam. Sprayed on and then hopefully painted by now to form a minor barrier to avoid dusting of the product over the years. Just encase it. Have a handyman come do it, wont be that much money and it will look professional and you will be happier.
heres how others have dealt with popcorn ceilings.https://www.hometalk.com/categories/remodeling-renovating/ceiling/popcorn-ceilings
Call in the professionals they have the right equipment and skills and will have it done in no time, plus leave you clean and tidy afterwards.
if you can afford it call the pros to do this but if money is a concern just add something over it. If you want a cabin look add pine flooring, dry wall over the popcorn ceiling for a more modern look.
You could go crazy and add a tile ceiling.
