Kitchen disaster! Need ideas

So we’re moving in to a small apartment. The place needs some love and we have approval to do whatever we like. Of course I need to pick a paint for the walls because ketchup and mustard just won’t work. I need your help with countertop ideas. Right now it’s just wood that has been painted black. I’m thinking of doing marble contact paper and taking the handles off and painting them rosegold if I can find that color.
I’d love to hear your suggestions. More photos to come when we get the keys in two weeks.
I would start by painting the walls a light color. Maybe put some lighting under the cabinets. You can get LED strips that just stick on. Possibly white shutters just covering the bottom half of the window and a little valance at the top. You need some light in this room. The wooden floor is beautiful. Some shelves and plants would be nice as well.

I know some people use Contact paper to change countertops, but I personally like the look of faux granite or faux marble done with paint. It's your choice, of course. I would definitely lighten things up, so dark in the kitchen with dark counters and cupboards and the deeper red walls. You are right the ketchup and mustard have to go. If the hardware on the cupboards is metal, think about going with Rustoleum paint, it comes in many colors, finishes and metallics and should be durable. Will be waiting for the rest of the pictures after you get your keys and can see the rest of the apartment. You have a good landlord that they let you change up the apartment without repercussion. I wish others were that way!
I am about to do a "marble" countertop myself. I'm trying dc fix grey marble that I got from Amazon. For your hardware I highly recommend Rub n buff metallic wax from Amaco. They don't have a rose gold per se, but they do offer an Autumn Gold that's close. Since it's actually metal it's incredibly realistic and durable! Plus, because it'snot a spray, there's less mess, though I would probably consider a clear acrylic spray top coat for wear. Congrats on your new digs!

Leave one wall red if you wish as an accent. The rest very light, in the white or cream.
The black should remain, it will look OK after the red is gone(I am talking about counter surfaces that are going to get wet) Any other surface made of wood, just apply a self adhesive paper in marble print.
Make sure the landlord PUTS IN WRITING IN YOUR CONTRACT that is OKAY to do whatever you want.
Not sure if you mean a gut & remodel of the whole kitchen, OR just modifications to the current footprint to make it more workable...So I'll go w/ both...For more permanent changes...We need more pics of the kitchen & eating area...Without those there isn't much we can offer for changes. From the 2 pics you've posted...
1st ~ I would rip out the current cabinets & counters.
2nd ~ I would flip the room 90 degrees because then there would be more space. I would remove that wall bump in the corner next to the stove & square off that corner. I would use the length of the back wall for upper & lower cabinets. Can't see the fridge so I'm guessing it's ok where it is. I would center the sink to the wall, add a dishwasher near by, then put up cabinets on either side.
3rd ~ I'd place a long island in front w/ 4 chairs for sitting. I would paint the walls a very light grey, white for the trim. I would do white cabinets. Make the island cabinets a different color.
Now, for temporary fixes...Again, I would paint all of the walls a very light grey. To change the look of the cabinets...You can paint the boxes white then you can get bead board wallpaper & glue them to the face of each cabinet, trim them out then paint them white.
