Bathtub surround kits are sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, and any larger hardware store or lumber yard.
The drywall needs to be removed. Have a plumber install a shower head & new faucet. Install cement board in it's place. Water proof the screw holes & seams. Pick out some beautiful tile. Tile all the way to the ceiling. Grout the tiles & seal the grout. Caulk around the tub where the tile meets the tub. Now enjoy!!
You can go old school, and get a clawfoot tub type shower rod and curtain, it also has the shower attachment and all... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=claw+foot+shower+curtain+rods you put the shower curtain into the tub and they are much larger. The wall is painted with heavy enamel or semi-gloss. You don't want to get the wall wet.

Other way is to add a resin surround ..... https://www.homedepot.com/s/resin%2520bathtub%2520shower%2520surround?NCNI-5 I went this route with my old house cause the original tile panel was deteriorating. Love it, easy to clean, no problems, picked on that had bottle storage, and was able to cut it around a large tub window. I even was able to drill into it to put grab bars.
Ceramic tile
Yes Maureen has it right
Probably be best to wrap the walls with a backerboard (don't forget to tape and seal the joints), and tile the walls. I pull this up on the net:
Install Cement Backerboard
Apply cement backerboard, seam tape to the joints, then coat over the tape with thinset mortar.
