Hi Leonettifine46! I have three Chiwee's. Half Chihuahua and half dachshund. They are very small and do great on grass and rock. I think a small patch of grass would be fine.
At my house there is everything from a Chihuahua mix to a Great Dane. As long as they have a big enough patch to sun themselves and do their business they will be fine. Being Chi's, they can be picky. My girl Daisey is the funniest little dog I have ever seen. Picking a spot to do her business or sun herself is done with the utmost precision. She sniffs as if inspecting fine vintage wine. I will move heaven and earth to keep my pets happy and healthy, so growing a little grass will make them very excited little pups. 🐶
Grass grows really well just about everywhere.
no, just remove an suitable size area where you find convenient, work the top 3-4 inches of soil with a rake, and purchase sod by the square; how are you going to mow it? I would think a 4 x 4' area would be plenty ... but not sure what purpose you intend it to be used for -- if for 'bathroom' use for the dog, you may find that their urine causes dead patches ( or not -- depends on a lot of factors ).
I am a Chi-Mom of 3. I moved from Texas grass yard to Washington rock yard. Aside from the fact they had been traveling for a week, the rock yard caused minimal confusion for them. They got used to it very quickly. I teach all my dogs the "outside" means go out for potty time not just out. This is very handy when visiting others and/or traveling cross country. After a few days in the new place, I took them to my daughter's grassy yard. The boy did fine (they pee anywhere, right?) but the two girls crossed the grass and headed for the rock garden to pee. No issues - no problems, they will adjust and adapt just encourage them like you do for anything "new" for Chi's.
I'd remove as many rocks as possible. Their littl feet are so delicate. I have 2

As Landshark said, what is the purpose of growing grass? Is it for you or your dogs?
