black mold is a serious situation....long run call a professional....been there done that
You will not know till you take it down and open it up. Be prepared to replace everything behind the walls. Suit up and do it carefully. You may have to call in the pros as this is considered hazardous waste and is highly regulated, you just can't toss moldy construction material in a construction dumpster. If you do this and the area is not quarantined properly, all you are doing is spreading the mold around thereby contaminating the entire house and compromising the health of all the occupants including pets. Does the renovation you are planning require permits? Have they been pulled?
These links all work well for everyday surface mold, not for severe contamination behind walls.

DIY shows are great fun. What most people do not realize is that they have an entire team working that you never see. Plus inspectors and specialty trade personnel for every aspect of the renovation. You get the opening shots, some highly staged "construction" shots then magically a spotless, designer perfect space in the reveal shots.
Not trying to scare you or rain on your parade, just need to prepare you for what might be necessary. And to plan accordingly. Hopefully it won't be bad and you will be able to proceed worry free!

Soak anything suspicious with a bleach solution before touching. Chlorine bleach is a very effective mold killer. It needs to be killed before you allow the particles to go airborn.
If you do find mold, what you do is replace what is bad. Wash down everything that isn't rotted, use at least bleach water. Do a final rinse with vinegar and let it sit to kill the spores. If you have black mold, please be careful as it can cause health problems breathing it in, so take precautions.
